Exercise: Direct Messaging

A-gamers need to honor the old truism that there are three topics to avoid: money, politics, and religion. And yet part of connecting with readers is embracing what makes you passionate. In interviews and blog posts, you’ll be asked to opine a LOT, so identify topics that give your ideal readers a chance to see what gets your heart pumping.

  • Name three topics that relate directly to your work that would appeal to your ideal readers.
  • Name three topics related to your work that would appeal to untapped potential readers.
  • Narrow that list of six to two topics and write a clear “message” statement that articulates your position on that topic in a positive, branded way. Aim for quotable coherence
